Abstract

This report presents statistical data on the dropout rates in Massachusetts public schools for 1990. The data were gathered through a state mandated annual survey of the state's public schools. Dropouts are defined as students aged 16 years or older who leave school prior to graduation for reasons other than transfer to another school. The report presents findings in several sections. Section I presents data on annual dropout rates by grade, gender, race/ethnicity, Kind of Community (KOC), Service Delivery Area (SDA), and program area. Section II provides data on projected 4-year dropout rates that are based on annual dropout rates and estimate the percentage of entering ninth graders who may not graduate from high school. Sections I and II present statistical data in 11 tables and 6 graphs. Section III provides technical information such as sources of the data, limitations of the data, and methods used to calculate dropout rates. Section IV lists annual dropout rates by school in nine pages of tables. Section V lists projected 4-year dropout rates by school district in eight pages of tables. Appendices contain the definition of a dropout for 1992, lists of communities by SDA, and lists of communities by KOC. (JB)
