Abstract

This guide is aimed at improving health services for people with developmental disabilities by educating people presently training as health practitioners and persons working in community service programs. It contains information on health care needs of people with developmental disabilities and recommendations for health care practices adapted from accepted standards of health care for the general population. The guide covers definitions, health care services delivery trends and issues, general child and adolescent health care, adult health care, nutrition, reproductive health care and sexuality, dental health care, infectious disease, and chronic health conditions. Appendices provide immunization recommendations, client education information on identifying and managing minor illnesses, a list of 27 selected readings and educational materials, and a list of 26 Minnesota organizations and programs.
