Abstract

An overview is presented of the beginning teacher program in the Frederick County (Maryland) schools. The focus of the program is on three concerns: (1) the problems of beginning teachers as perceived by themselves and others; (2) the kinds of support efforts that presently exist; and (3) implications for the future development of support programs for teacher induction. The program consists of a four-day preschool workshop which focuses on curriculum, a one day follow-up workshop held during the school year, two days of observation to be used by the new teacher for instructional improvement, and a support seminar which is available for college graduate credit or Maryland State Department of Education workshop credit. Descriptions are given of each of these program components and are accompanied by materials used to supplement the program, and by schedules and agendas for each component. (JD)
