Using Computer-Based Artificial Intelligence Technology to Help ESL Students.

Abstract

This paper discusses ways in which artificial intelligence (AI) technologies may be used to aid students for whom English is a second language in the development of language and reading skills, and asserts that the coupling of technology with close adult-teacher contacts within a context of cultural precedents and social rewards is an important element in success. Three major categories of problems that may inhibit the learning of reading and language skills are identified: physical (both aural and visual), environmental experience, and inadequate teaching. To illustrate how AI may help build a sound language base, the paper cites two examples of microcomputer knowledge-based systems: the Reading Computer that reads to children in several languages, thereby helping unilingual English teachers provide necessary background in a child's first language; and experimental systems that can instantly translate a teacher's English language voice into another language (Spanish, French, German, or Russian). It is suggested that AI language programs can help develop higher order thinking skills and systematic problem solving strategies, and should be incorporated into educational programs for minority students as early in their education as possible.
