Abstract

This paper examines the nature of the archivist's profession, discusses the kinds of archival training currently offered in other nations, and suggests ways in which the education of archivists could be standardized worldwide. The tasks, functions, and roles of archivists in government and business environments are explored, and two modes of training--one based on history-related disciplines, the other based on records management--are examined. Suggestions for the standardization of archivist education programs include curriculum guidelines and two suggested programs of study. Supporting materials are appended. (FM)
