Aspects of Upper Secondary Economics Education in E.E.C. Countries.

This publication contains a sampling of conference papers delivered at the first European Economic Community (E.E.C.) Working Conference on Economics Education held at St. Ignatius University, Antwerp in September, 1976. Invited representative participants from the nine E.E.C. countries met to discuss common problems relating to economics in upper secondary education. The book is divided into five sections. Part I consists of a background paper on the evolution of economics education in E.E.C. countries. Part II deals with "Economics in the Curriculum." The papers explore the role of economics in Danish interdisciplinary social science courses, provide an Irish view of the relationship between economics and business studies, and discuss the Italian experience in grappling with the first stages of the introduction of economics into the upper secondary general education curriculum. "Inductive and Deductive Methods of Teaching Economics" is the topic of Part Three. Speakers from France, the Netherlands, and Great Britain explore the debate. The papers in Part IV discuss the preparation of economics teachers. Surveys of British and French practice and a detailed case study of Flemish Belgian practice in the teaching of economic teachers are provided. The final section of the book, Part V, includes an account of the origins of the Antwerp Conference, a comprehensive summary of its proceedings, and details of plans for future meetings. (Author/RM)
