Abstract

This volume of selected readings is designed to aid artists and educators in the development of a knowledge base within the realm of lifelong learning and the visual arts. Compiled for use by both student and practitioner, these readings are divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides readers with background, rationale, and directions for emulation by art educators and others interested in the field. Chapter 1 includes such titles as "Growing Old with the Arts," by Paul Kim; "For the First Time: The Arts at Mid-Life," by Ann Jennings; and "Toward a Philosophical Base for Community Arts--The Museum Role," by Joseph Covington. The readings in chapter 2 review current practices, for example, "Art and the Confined Aged," by Pearl Greenberg; "Training Personnel for Work with the Elderly," by Donald Hoffman; and "The Rural Elderly and the Arts," by Claire Clements. The readings in chapter 3 focus on research and include such topics as "Toward an Understanding of Lifelong Growth and Participation in Visual Arts Production," by Leslye Prentice Ruth Bloom; "Aging and Creativity," by Lila Tabor and John Rogers:. and "Relationship between Creative Activity and the Health of Elderly Persons," by Alice Dawson and Warren Baller.
