Abstract

This annotated bibliography about crime and disruption in schools has been assembled from academic, professional, and government sources. The citations are organized into four major parts. "Overview: Nature and Extent of the Problem" contains studies that describe the cost of school crimes, primarily vandalism and arson, both in dollars and in psychosociological terms. "The Students: Misbehavior and Traditional Discipline" concerns studies of the causes and manifestations of student misbehavior. The effect of traditional school discipline methods (corporal punishment and suspension) on students is included, as are several discussions of students' rights. "School Programs: Multiple Approaches" includes a sampling of curriculum changes, teaching methods, student-based discipline, alternative schools, programs for handling known offenders, and other innovative strategies. "School Buildings: Physical Security" describes the use of police and security guards on the premises, together with a variety of anti-intrusion hardware and systems. The Executive Summary of the National Institute of Education study, "Violent Schools--Safe Schools," is reprinted in the appendices following a list of sources and of organizations currently working in the field.
