The document is designed to aid junior and senior high school teachers develop and implement economic education programs. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of money, banking, and the Federal Reserve System in the American economic system. The document is presented in six sections. Section I focuses on functions and forms of money. Section II explains services and functions of commercial banks, including security for deposits, loans for individuals and businesses, and transfer of money payments. Section III discusses purposes, functions, and organization of the Federal Reserve System. Section IV explains the check clearing activities of the Federal Reserve Bank. Section V investigates how commercial banks create money. The final section examines how monetary and fiscal policies work. For each section, information is presented on generalizations related to the topic, activities, objectives, teaching strategies, materials needed, time required, readings, and reference materials. Activities involve students in role playing, writing checks, answering review questions, class discussion, brainstorming, reading and analyzing selected assignments, filling in worksheets, and viewing filmstrips.
