Abstract

The Panel on Statistics of the Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics (CUPM) prepared this booklet to provide guidance to departments of mathematics at smaller colleges and universities on instruction in statistics. Contents include: (1) a discussion of the background of the reports and some review of past and current approaches to the general introductory course; (2) recommended objectives for the course and a discussion of their implications; (3) a detailed description of a conventional course; (4) recommendations for alternative approaches; (5) suggestions for improving the effectiveness of the course; and (6) a selected bibliography on teaching statistics.
