Abstract

This bibliography of selected television research lists 914 references to English, French and German publications (empirical studies, research reviews and summarizing literature) which deal with the use of television and its various functions for children and adolescents and particularly with the effects of television on children's personality and socialization. All of the studies were published from 1970 to about March 1978. Titles of each entry are in English. Contents in 12 sections cover a wide range of topics: bibliographies, mass communication research, general introductory works and literature reviews, studies on the uses and functions of television and other media (including comparisons of various age groups, developmental studies), studies on cognitive and emotional effects and studies on aspects of socialization (including socialization and interaction in the family context). Also cited are studies on the effects of TV violence on social behavior (including the research program of the Surgeon General's Scientific Advisory Committee on Television and Social Behavior), studies of the effects of prosocial content, formative and summative research on television series for children (Sesame Street, The Electric Company, Around the Bend, Carrascolendas, and other series), studies on the effects of news and information programs, studies on the effects of television advertising, and research agenda and recommendations. Entries are indexed by author and subject. (Author/RH)
