Abstract
- Books for this annotated list have been measured against commonly accepted literary standards. Fiction is considered in terms of important themes, substantial plots, effective style, valid management of time and place settings, and believable characters whose personalities hold significance for children, from preschoolers to fourteen-year-olds. Nonfiction has been chosen for its accuracy, style, and the pertinence of its subject matter to the age-level addressed. The quality of illustration, format, general graphic presentation, and photography are evaluated for both categories. The table of contents classifies books first according to broad age levels and then according to subject categories and subcategories. Most listings within the volume are annotated with descriptions that precisely delineate content, age level, and, for fiction, recurring themes. A directory of publishers, a title index, and an author index conclude the bibliography. (MAI)
