This handbook, an updated and revised version of the 1975 original, contains the new statutory requirements, state board of education rules, and court decisions pertaining to teacher dismissal in Illinois. This handbook is designed to acquaint Illinois school administrators and school board members with the legal procedures necessary in dismissal cases, especially in those that involve complicated charges, such as failure to maintain discipline, to prepare lesson plans, and to cooperate with associates. The authors emphasize that the complex web of legal procedures involved in dismissal requires the early assistance of the school attorney. The handbook discusses the due process requirements and the conduct of dismissal hearings for both tenured and probationary teachers.
