Remedial Reading Materials and Methods Used by Secondary Teachers of English and Reading, Chairpersons, and Supervisors of Reading in South Carolina During the 1974-1975 Academic Year.

The purpose of this study was to obtain information about which remedial reading materials and methods secondary teachers of English and reading, chairpersons, and supervisors of reading in South Carolina are using with students having difficulty in reading. A questionnaire survey was sent to all the schools teaching grades 9-12 in the state of South Carolina to determine those materials and methods that helped students in grades 9-12 who are severely handicapped in basic reading skills and are reading two or more years below grade level. Based on the data collected in this study, it was noted that many of the materials and methods used widely by those responsible for teaching reading in other states are not being utilized in South Carolina. Those materials and methods used most widely were reported to be worksheets, an individualized method, allowing students class time to read, the record player, and the tape recorder. Some of the other findings were that the vast majority of the respondents did not use the selected survey tests or the diagnostic tests, the selected intelligence tests, the selected basal programs, or the selected supplementary programs.
