Abstract

"Insights" presents the texts of the major addresses, panel reactions, and proceedings of the first State-wide conference on consumer and home-making education, entitled "The Challenge of Change." A theme that emerged was the need for greater cooperation between classroom and community in teaching students not only about the systems that guide their lives but also how to utilize these systems at their functional level. A second theme was that of the meaning to teachers of massive, accelerating, overwhelming change as a force, rather than an abstraction. A third theme was the challenge presented to the creative teacher by the growing sensitivity to multiple life-styles, cultures, and values that exist in every classroom and community. Other topics were the impact of change, the woman's place, individualized instruction, the dual role of women, the emerging consumer, involving community agencies and people, the market place (about deceptive advertising), and becoming a change agent.
