This report is an updated version of an earlier report -- State Education: Structure and Organization. It is designed for use by State education agency personnel, by Office of Education staff concerned with providing leadership or services to the several States in improving the education enterprise, by national education organizations, by students of State school administration, and by other individuals and organizations. This work is primarily concerned with the present overall administration and organization of the central education agencies in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, and the Virgin Islands. The compilation contains a description of the legally created State coordinating or governing agency for public higher education and narrative and tabular summaries of pertinent data of the State education agencies, State boards of education, and chief State school officers.
