Negotiations between the landgrave of Hesse and the Moroccan empire during the first siege of Gibraltar (1704-1705)

During the first siege of Gibraltar (1704-1705), the Landgrave of Hesse began a series of negotiations with Emperor of Morocco Muley Ismael and his viceroy, Governor Ali, to obtain supplies for the city of Gibraltar, but also to obtain the horses he needed to be able to carry out his plans for expansion in Andalusia and get control of that territory before heading to Madrid. In this paper we explore the correspondence of the Landgrave of Hesse with the Governor Ali of Tangier and the Emperor Muley Ismael in order to reach an agreement for the supply of food and horses that came to involve even the fate of Ceuta and finally did not take place. Finally, we examine the reasons why the agreement did not come to a good end despite the good will of both sides. &nbsp
Durante el sitio de Gibraltar (1704-1705) el landgrave de Hesse entabló una serie de negociaciones con el emperador de Marruecos Muley Ismael y su virrey, el alcaide Alí, para conseguir el aprovisionamiento de la plaza, pero también para conseguir los caballos que necesitaba para poder llevar a cabo sus planes de expansión por Andalucía y conseguir el dominio de ese territorio antes de dirigirse a Madrid. En este artículo exploramos la correspondencia del landgrave de Hesse con el alcaide Alí de Tánger y el emperador Muley Ismael con vistas a llegar a un acuerdo para el suministro de víveres y caballos que llegó a involucrar la suerte de Ceuta y que, finalmente, no tuvo lugar. Por último, examinamos las causas de que el acuerdo no llegase a buen fin a pesar de la buena voluntad de ambas partes.
