V současné době jsou si lidé již plně vědomi toho, jak drahá je energetická závislost na fosilních palivech. Snaha snížit tuto závislost jde ruku v ruce s ekologickými limity, které omezují produkce nebezpečných sloučenin. Biomasa je palivo které nevytváří velké množství sloučenin síry a oxid uhličitý vznikající při spalování je v uzavřeném koloběhu. Různé druhy biomasy mají různou výhřevnost a tedy různé nároky na množství potřebné pro výrobu MWh. Proto je třeba volit palivo s ohledem na dostupnost v dané lokalitě.
