Abstract

Background: self-harming behavior is understood as self-harm without suicidal intent by a person. In many cases, made through sharp and/or lacerating objects. It is a behavior associated with adolescent ages, but also in university ages. Objective: to determine the frequency of self-injurious behavior without suicidal intent in students of the ninth and tenth academic cycle of the University of Cuenca, period March-August. Cuenca, 2023. Methodology: An observational, analytical study was made with sample of 169 students. Two surveys were conducted, one to identify socio-demographic factors and associated risk factors. The other was a test in order to find self-harm. Tables of frequency, percentages and statisticians were used for relationships between variables. Results: A total of 81.1% were students between 22-25 years; with 58.6% of women; the 89.9% without partners and 71% live with parents. In terms of self-injury, it was barely present in 13.6% of the patients with skin cuts in 52.2% and overdose or poisoning in 30.4%. Family history was also found at 18.3% and psychiatric disorders at 9.5%. Conclusions: predominance of the female sex, students between 22 and 25 years of age, mostly singles, most of whom lived with their parents. The vast majority did not incur self-harm, but those who did it they repeat this behavior repeatedly, through skin cuts and overdoses. Family history, psychiatric disorders and childhood abuse were also found.
