Abstract

In the present study, the guinea pig production systems were characterized in the communes of Santa Marianita, Pelincay, Puculcay, Cerro Negro and Huertas of the Pucara and Santa Isabel cantons of the province of Azuay. The study was carried out by applying surveys on a Likert scale where values are assigned to the answers given (always 4, almost always 3, sometimes 2, rarely 1 and never 0), the questions applied to 82 guinea pig breeders, the one-factor ANOVA statistic was used; and the Kruskal-Wallis test, which helped determine the means and proportions, indicating that the five pillars have deficiencies in their development, paying greater interest to the Nutrition pillar with an average of 44 in positive responses, the Commerce pillar with an average of 52 positive responses and the Genetics pillar that presented an average of 64 positive responses, no pillar exceeded the general average of 65.6 positive responses. At the community level, Puculcay was the one that presented the best results in the performance of its pillars with values of 67% for management; 52% in health; 55% in genetics; 47% in nutrition and 69% in commerce and the commune with the lowest results was Cerro Negro. Thus, these results indicate that the predominant system was the family system, causing the development of guinea pig production in the communities to not prosper, with the majority being destined for self-consumption without adequate management, nutrition, genetics, health, and trade. leading to low technological level and productive rates, recommending technical assistance, and promoting the development and formation of associations to improve effective breeding.
