Abstract

This paper addresses several expressions from the Anglo-Latin chronicles of the Old English period connected with the military milieu (e.g. _dominor loco funeris_ or _accipio victoriam_) and their possible sources in Old English phraseology. The Anglo-Latin data is compared to the _Anglo-Saxon Chronicle_ where similar phrases are attested and to the use of military vocabulary in Latin sources outside England. The coinage of such expressions is analysed in terms of first-language lexical transfer.
