Los viajes de los indios de Portoviejo a la Corte española. Conflictos interétnicos y territoriales

This paper presents a general characterization of the Indians of Portoviejo, the central area of the Ecuadorian coast, throughout the colonial period. The author analyzes the reactions of indigenous groups to the regulations of the colonial ad-ministration and the frequent disputes with the white and mestizo populations in the region over territorial control and labor rights. Next, the article describes some of the voyages that certain ethnic authorities undertook to Spain, seeking that their complaints and demands were heard directly by the King and his court.
El artículo ofrece una caracterización general de los indios de Portoviejo, en la zona central de la Costa ecuatoriana, a lo largo del período colonial. Se analizan las reac-ciones de las parcialidades indígenas ante las regulaciones de la administración co-lonial y las frecuentes disputas con los sectores blancos y mestizos de la región por el control del territorio y la mano de obra. Seguidamente, el artículo describe algunos de los viajes que algunas autoridades étnicas emprendieron hacia España, en pro-cura de que sus quejas y demandas fuesen oídas directamente por el Rey y su corte.
