Abstract

Chuck Palahnuik´s novel Fight Club discusses the conflict between body and mind. It shows the construction as well as the limits of one’s inner and outer self. The narrator of the novel is trapped in his body and his surroundings. Therefore, the body has to be annihilated in order to be free. Thus, it is to be shown that destruction and creation are mutually dependent on each other by suggesting that a new self can only be created by means of the destruction of the body. Hence, it is to be suggested that an individual identity is only possible through bodily suffering on both a physical level as well as a societal level.
