Abstract

Racial and ethnic minority communities in Utah bear a disproportionate burden of disease and poor health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic brought racial and social inequity to the forefront of public health. Available data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal COVID-19 health disparities nationally by race and ethnicity in every aspect from testing and vaccination rates to cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Many factors contribute to health disparities in racial and ethnic minority populations. The DHHS OHE Health equity framework outlines how structural and social determinants of health impact health equity and quality of life and the need for public health, health care, and social systems to be adequate and accessible for Utahns of all races and ethnicities.
