La salida de Maximiliano Arboleya de El Carbayón en 1920: el viraje tradicionalista del decano ovetense

En noviembre de 1919 se hace efectiva la absorción por parte del diario ovetense El Carbayón de su hasta entonces rival como diario católico de referencia en la capital asturiana, El Pueblo Astur. Los intereses del llamado “decano” de la prensa asturiana son defendidos en las negociaciones por el sacerdote lavianés Maximiliano Arboleya, que al hacerse cargo del mismo en 1901 convirtió la antigua cabecera en un referente de modernidad entre la prensa católica de la región. Sin embargo, la tercera época del rotativo inaugurada tras la fusión, conllevará un giro editorial e ideológico hacia posturas recalcitrantes y ultramontanas por parte de la nueva dirección, que forzará a Arboleya a abandonar “su” periódico. Este artículo lleva a cabo un recorrido por los cambios experimentados por el rotativo, desde el impulso noticiero de principios de siglo hasta su transformación en diario tradicionalista en la década de 1920.
In November 1919, the absorption by the El Carbayón newspaper of its until then rival as a leading Catholic newspaper in the Asturian capital, El Pueblo Astur, becomes effective. The interests of the so-called “dean” of the Asturian press are defended in the negotiations by the Lavian priest Maximiliano Arboleya, who, taking charge of it in 1901, turned the former journal into a benchmark of modernity among the Catholic press in the region. However, the third period of the newspaper inaugurated after the merger will involve an editorial and ideological turn towards recalcitrant and ultramontanes positions by the new direction, which will force Arboleya to abandon “his” newspaper. This article takes a tour of the changes experienced by the Catholic newspaper, from the news and business impulse of the early twentieth century to its transformation into a traditionalist newspaper towards the 1920s.
