Face-to-face, online or hybrid?: Perceptions and preferences by higher education teachers and students

Online and hybrid education have expanded in recent years due, on the one hand, to technical advances and a growing demand from society, and, on the other hand, to the COVID-19 pandemic in which universities had to transform their face-to-face models out of necessity. The objective of our research is to evaluate the perceptions and preferences towards the various types of current education (face-to-face, online and hybrid). For this, a validated quantitative study is provided based on an online survey distributed among teachers and students at the University of Porto, obtaining a total of 684 responses. The results show their perceptions towards certain aspects within the formative process that originate tendencies of preference towards the different types of education. The topics of analysis are discussed with the most recent literature on the implementation in education of the various methodological typologies. The conclusions of the study show a good relative perception of the online education that both groups currently teach or receive, the preference for face-to-face education (teachers) and for face-to-face and hybrid education (students), and the factors that significantly affect their inclinations towards the various types of education.
La educación online y la híbrida se han expandido en los últimos años debido, por un lado, a los avances técnicos y a una creciente demanda por parte de la sociedad, y, por otro lado, a la pandemia de la COVID-19 en la que las universidades tuvieron que transformar sus modelos presenciales por necesidad. El objetivo de nuestra investigación es evaluar las percepciones y preferencias hacia los diversos tipos de educación actual (presencial, online e híbrida). Para ello se aporta un estudio cuantitativo validado basado en una encuesta online difundida entre profesorado y estudiantado de la Universidad de Oporto obteniendo un total de 684 respuestas. Los resultados evidencian sus percepciones hacia ciertos aspectos dentro del proceso formativo que originan tendencias de preferencia hacia los diversos modelos de educación. Se discuten las temáticas de análisis con la literatura más reciente sobre la implementación en educación de las diversas tipologías metodológicas. Las conclusiones del estudio muestran una buena percepción relativa de la educación online que imparten o reciben actualmente ambos colectivos, la preferencia por la educación presencial (docentes) y por la educación presencial e híbrida (estudiantes), y los factores que inciden significativamente en sus inclinaciones hacia los diversos tipos de educación.
