Comércio internacional e padrões trabalhistas: a falácia do discurso humanitário

This article analyses the attempt of imposing labour standards through the international trade policy currently headed by the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The article scrutinizes the origin and the evolution of the subject in the international arena, focusing on the human rights argument. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the contradictions and deficiencies of the humanitarian argument, which is commonly used by those who support a formal linkage between international trade and labour standards.
O presente artigo analisa a tentativa de se assegurar padrões trabalhistas através das regras comerciais multilaterais existentes no âmbito da Organização Mundial do Comércio (OMC). O artigo discorre sobre a origem e a evolução do tema no cenário internacional, dando ênfase ao argumento humanitário. O objetivo fundamental do trabalho é evidenciar as contradições e insuficiências do argumento humanitário, o qual é freqüentemente invocado por aqueles que advogam a vinculação entre comércio internacional e padrões trabalhistas.
