Homenaje al doscientos aniversario de la parroquia de la Candelaria de Ingenio 1815-2015

This article examines the role that the Christian religion has played in setting a high amount of toponyms in the municipality of Ingenio (Canary Islands). The members of the Christian religion played an important role at every stage of the Episcopal Lordship of Agüime’s involvement in the configuration of Gran Canaria after the European domination. This essay analyzes the activities of some priests, archbishops, nuns, bishops and even missionaries and parishioners who have been relevant in this municipality in order to create different and specific toponyms. Their activities also resulted in the beginnings of friendly relations between the Christian religion and the people who lived in the Vega de Aguatona, as Ingenio was known in the past, due to the religious fervor of the people of Ingenio to the the Virgin of Candelaria and Buen Suceso. The work of some wealthy families in the ancient Vega de Aguatona was crucial to encourage worship to both Virgins in this municipality and, at the same time, to promote new toponyms which were also created and used for the common citizens. In this essay we have the opportunity of analyzing each of them.
Este artículo examina el papel que la religión Cristiana ha jugado en establecer una alta cantidad de topónimos en el municipio de Ingenio (Islas Canarias). Los miembros de la religión Cristiana jugaron un papel importante en cada etapa de la participación del Señorío Espiscopal de Agüimes en la configuración de Gran Canaria después del dominio Europeo. Este texto analiza las actividades de algunos curas, azobispos, monjas, obispos e incluso misioneros y feligreses que han sido relevantes en este municipio para crear topónimos diferentes y específicos. Sus actividades también tuvieron que ver con el principio de relaciones amistosas entre la religión Cristiana y las personas que vivían en la Vega de Aguatona, como Ingenio fue conocido en el pasado, debido al fervor religioso de las personas de Ingenio a la Virgen de Candelaria y Buen Suceso. El trabajo de algunas familias adineradas en la primitiva Vega de Aguatona fue crucial para fomentar la adoración a ambas vírgenes en este municipio, y a la misma vez, para promover nuevos topónimos que fueron también creados y usados por los ciudadanos comunes. En este texto nosotros tenemos la oportunidad de analizar cada uno de ellos.
