Cultura escrita na Fronteira Sul: práticas intelectuais indígenas e usos políticos da escrita entre os Kaingang

Regarding the geopolitical and cultural formations of the territories and populations of the border regions of Southern Brazil, historians have posed burning problems in the history of these processes. These problems have been extensively analyzed in studies of environmental history, colonization and social movements, indigenous ethno-history, indigenous ethno-linguistics and archaeological studies. Conversely, the themes of written culture and indigenous intellectual practices seem not yet consolidated within these studies, despite the fact that it is increasingly possible to analyze them from new problems that can be posed onto the documentation and bibliography already known or to the new documentary collections that are formed in the archives. With this in mind, and considering that the studies of written culture and intellectual history need to overcome the Eurocentric view, which largely neglected, among others, indigenous intellectual practices, this article proposes a panoramic presentation of the possibilities of analysis in historical perspectives of intellectual practices and political uses of writing among indigenous people, especially the Kaingang. Based on the analysis of classic documents and texts by memorialists, travelers and ethnologists, in dialogue with articles, chapters and books of specialized studies, this study thus covers an extended period, from the beginning of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century, and has as its spatial cut the currently called Mesoregion of Fronteira Sul.
Os historiadores propuseram problemas candentes à história dos processos de formação geopolítica e cultural dos territórios e das populações das regiões de fronteira do Brasil Meridional. Esses problemas vêm sendo amplamente analisados nos estudos de história ambiental, da colonização e dos movimentos sociais, de etnohistória indígena, de etnolinguística indígena e nos estudos arqueológicos. Entretanto, os temas da cultura escrita e das práticas intelectuais indígenas parecem ainda não consolidados no interior desses estudos, não obstante seja cada vez mais possível de serem analisados a partir de novos problemas que podem ser colocados à documentação e à bibliografia já conhecida ou aos novos acervos documentais que se formam nos arquivos. Tendo isso em vista, e considerando que os estudos da cultura escrita e da história intelectual precisam superar o olhar eurocêntrico, que negligenciou, em grande medida, entre outras, as práticas intelectuais indígenas, neste artigo é proposta uma apresentação panorâmica das possibilidades de análise em perspectiva histórica das práticas intelectuais e dos usos políticos da escrita entre os indígenas, especialmente os Kaingang. A partir da análise de documentos e textos clássicos de memorialistas, viajantes e etnólogos, em diálogo com artigos, capítulos e livros de estudos especializados, o presente estudo cobre assim um período ampliado, que vai de começos do século XIX até fins do século XX, e tem como recorte espacial a atualmente chamada Mesorregião da Fronteira Sul.
