Abstract

The existence and implementation of reserved cases (to the Pope, bishops, superiors) is perhaps one of the major differences between early modern and contemporary Catholicism. The purpose of this study, by examining the question of reservation in the Jesuit context, is to place itself on the side of the analysis of devices of governance of consciousness. It is not, of course, directly an analysis of the theorization of consciousness itself, but the hypothesis we would like to put forward is that this theorization is itself also the product some theoretical adjustments issued from the confrontation with the confessionalization process. Therefore such a theorization can only be understood in relation to the mechanisms by which bodies and souls are governed
