Abstract

LKAB is automating two of the world's largest underground mines at Kiruna and Malmberget, Sweden. Computer-guided, large-scale automatic machines are being used. Four Atlas Copco drilling rigs are remotely operated from the control room on the 775 level. Later this year full scale tests of the operation and monitoring of autonomous LHDs (Tamrock Toro 2500) will be carried out. The automation network connecting the machine with the operator is based on two key technologies, a wireless high speed link for digital data, audio and video in real time and an ATM backbone network for data, audio and video transfer between the control room and the production areas.<br />LKAB is automating two of the world's largest underground mines at Kiruna and Malmberget, Sweden.
