Abstract

The Cononish gold mine development programme and the requirements of the environmental assessment regulations and local planning policies are outlined. The objectives, components and results of the environmental baseline programme are summarised and the methodology used for environmental impact identification and mitigation are described. The key environmental impacts identified include: the effect of liquid effluent discharges on the ecology of the River Cononish; dust generation from tailings; the visual and topographical effects of the tailings repository on landscape quality and wilderness value; the effects of noise; socio-economic impacts on the local communities; and site restoration and rehabilitation.<br />The Cononish gold mine development programme and the requirements of the environmental assessment regulations and local planning policies are outlined.
