Abstract

A discussion is presented of the trends and issues concerned with the selection of bored tunnels in Hong Kong. The need for, and advantages of, bored tunnel options for new infrastructure projects are emphasised, particularly with regard to social and other intangible costs associated with heavy surface construction works at street level. Projects outlined are the Route 3 Expressway, the airport railway, the East Kowloon sewer and the Fanling South Trunk sewer. The use of TBMs is discussed and a comparison is presented of costs/metre of various excavation methods for highway and railway tunnels.<br />A discussion is presented of the trends and issues concerned with the selection of bored tunnels in Hong Kong.
