Abstract

Introduction: Paediatric and adolescent breast pathologic disorders are relatively rare and present differently to adults. A 10-year review of a major children's hospital service was conducted. The objectives were to Describe the spectrum of pathology Review reports for terminology (e.g. Tanner classification and gynaecomastia). Method(s): A 10-year retrospective assessment of breast ultrasound examinations in patients aged 0-16 was performed. The results were classified by pathology and the need for follow-up imaging. They were also considered for the use of consistent terminology. Result(s): Ultrasound of the paediatric breast is a very uncommon examination in this public hospital setting (0.001%). While the normal breast is the most common finding, a broad range of pathologies was encountered. Primary malignancy is exceedingly rare. (Zero cases). Inconsistent use of terminology and understanding of normal anatomy can result in unnecessary uncertainty in final reports. Conclusion(s): Normal findings are the common outcome for patients. Standardised terminology and targeted reported may improve patient treatment/outcome. Take home message: Understanding the Tanner stages of the paediatric breast can assist in distinguishing normal appearances from pathology in this age group.
