Abstract
- This study deals with the climatic adaptation of Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in eight locations in whole Finland. The principal aim was to show the survival of the seeds, their viability to produce a tree, in different climatic conditions across four studied years, and in last term, the tree survival and wood tree production. The present investigation used information from seed weight and amount, flowering days and climatic conditions. The objectives were to quantify the number of viable seeds (figure 2) per cone and its weight. On the other hand, the role of the sum of the daily temperature, above 0 º C, and its relation to seed’s weight and production. Also, it was relevant to measure the importance of the flowering day and how it affects seeds' development. All together, the purpose was to find what is going on, nowadays, in Finland regarding seed reproduction and survival and its relation with the new climatic conditions. This work is presented as a Bachelor Thesis of Forestry Degree in the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain). The whole study was carried out at both the Finnish Forest Research Institute (METLA) and the University of Helsinki as a result of the signed agreements between those within the European Erasmus exchange student program.
