Le conditionnel épistémique riportivo en italien

Le conditionnel épistémique, dit « journalistique », du français suscite, depuis une vingtaine d’années, une véritable effervescence scientifique, alors que l’emploi correspondant du conditionnel italien (Vaticano sotto shock. Ci sarebbe un piano per uccidere il Papa) – dit condizionale riportivo – attire, semble-t-il, l’attention des linguistes à un degré bien moindre. C’est pourquoi nous étudierons dans cette contribution ce type de conditionnel épistémique en italien pour mettre à l’épreuve non seulement l’hypothèse selon laquelle les propriétés sémantiques et syntaxiques de cet emploi du conditionnel sont les mêmes que celles du français, mais aussi, et surtout, pour examiner, en ayant recours à différents types de corpus, s’il y a des différences quantitatives, diachroniques ou diaphasiques entre les deux langues en ce qui concerne le condizionale riportivo. Nous proposerons, entre autres, une nouvelle datation pour cet emploi du conditionnel en italien.
The reportive epistemic conditional in French has given rise to intensive scientific efforts during the last two decades, whereas the corresponding use of the Italian conditional (Vaticano sotto shock. Ci sarebbe un piano per uccidere il Papa) – the so-called condizionale riportivo – seems to have attracted the interest of linguists to a much lesser extent. This is why we will study this type of Italian epistemic conditional in this contribution in order to put to the test not only the hypothesis that the semantic and syntactic properties of this use are the same as in French, but also, and foremost, in order to examine in translation corpora as well as in comparable corpora whether there are any quantitative, diachronic or diaphasic differences between the two languages in this use. Amongst other things, we will put forward a new dating of the reportive conditional in Italian.
