Abstract

Deed of manumission dated December 22, 1855 by George W. Dobbin of Howard County, Maryland for his Negro slave named Benjamin Allen Chew. Witnessed by George L. Dobbin, R. A. Dobbin, Jr., and Justice of the Peace Jno. H. (John H.) Worthington and recorded on December 22 and then on December 26 by Howard County clerk W. H. Worthington, the document identifies Chew as age 28 years and specifies that his manumission is take effect immediately. (Editor's note: Why the deed of manumission was recorded twice, first on December 22 and then on December 26, is not known. Blank page 3 was not scanned and thus is not included.)
