Abstract

Deed of manumission dated May 29, 1860 by Robert E. Dorsey of Howard County for his Negro slave named Harriet Johnson, who is now the wife of Christopher Williams, and her four children: Charles, Christopher, Horace, and Sophy Williams. Witnessed by Th. (Thomas) Donaldson and Justice of the Peace Charles Soper and recorded by district clerk W. W. Watkins, the document identifies Harriet Johnson as a 30-year-old Negro woman, being the daughter of Minty ("the same purchased by me from Dr. Horace Waters"), to be set free immediately, and her four children: Charles age about 10 years, Sophy age about 9 years, Christopher age about 4 years, and Horace age about 2 years, with their freedom "to commence from the day after" each attains "10 years from this date."
