Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 <inline-formula> <math display="inline"> <semantics> <msub> <mi>TeO</mi> <mn>2</mn> </msub> emantics> </math> </inline-formula> crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total <inline-formula> <math display="inline"> <semantics> <msub> <mi>TeO</mi> <mn>2</mn> </msub> emantics> </math> </inline-formula> exposure of <inline-formula> <math display="inline"> <semantics> <mrow> <mn>86.3</mn> <mspace width="3.33333pt"></mspace> <mi>kg</mi> <mspace width="3.33333pt"></mspace> <mi>yr</mi> </mrow> emantics> </math> </inline-formula>, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of <inline-formula> <math display="inline"> <semantics> <mrow> <mn>0.014</mn> </mrow> emantics> </math> </inline-formula> <inline-formula> <math display="inline"> <semantics> <mrow> <mi>counts</mi> <mo>/</mo> <mo>(</mo> <mi>keV</mi> <mspace width="3.33333pt"></mspace> <mi>kg</mi> <mspace width="3.33333pt"></mspace> <mi>yr</mi> <mo>)</mo> </mrow> emantics> </math> </inline-formula>. In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of <inline-formula> <math display="inline"> <semantics> <mrow> <msup> <mrow></mrow> <mn>130</mn> </msup> <mi>Te</mi> <mo>></mo> <mn>1.3</mn> <mo>·</mo> <msup> <mn>10</mn> <mn>25</mn> </msup> </mrow> emantics> </math> </inline-formula> yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is pre
