Abstract
- BACKGROUND: Since 1987, the impact and increase HIV / AIDS has led to implement and increase combinations Antiretroviral (ARV), achieving a reduction in mortality by 35%; however, we face another problem, the occurrence of adverse long-term effects of these drugs, encompassing metabolic syndrome. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of metabolic syndrome in patients using antiretrovirals at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital. METHODOLOGY: Transversal prevalence an analytical study was conducted. We included all patients who belong to the Unit of Comprehensive Care for PLWHA-HVCM over 18 years receiving antiretroviral therapy for more than a month prior authorization. The information collected was analyzed using SPSS software 5. RESULTS: In a population of 211 patients, a prevalence of metabolic syndrome of 30.3% (n = 64) according to IDF criteria was found. The variables related to metabolic syndrome were: Age 42.86 (p 0.000); female 51.6% male and 48.4% (p 0.001); BMI: 82.8 overweight and obesity (p 0.000); Abdominal Circumference 100% (p 0.000); lipid profile: hypertriglyceridemia 86% (p 0.000), hypercholesterolemia 53% (p 0.012), abnormal HDL 83% (p 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: A high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients HIV + / AIDS with antiretroviral therapy was found but could not find a statistically significant relationship. While risk factors were: age, sex, BMI, waist circumference and dyslipidemia
