« Ce n’est pas l’art pour l’art »

Douala n’est pas seulement la capitale économique du Cameroun, c’est aussi un centre culturel vivant. En plus d’une production artistique internationale hautement reconnue, c'est une scène pour une myriade d’initiatives artistiques plus populaires, telles que des vidéos, de la musique et des spectacles d’humour. Dans cet article, je me concentre sur la production vidéo locale et retrace ses motivations économiques. Ce faisant, j’entends contribuer au débat sur le cinéma africain contemporain en nuançant la distinction nette entre la production francophone, habituellement caractérisée par son engagement politique, et sa contrepartie anglophone, souvent associée au cinéma commercial, comme le Nigérian Nollywood.

In addition to a highly credited international art production, it is a stage for a myriad of more popular art initiatives, such as videos, music, and stand-up comedies. In this article, I focus on the local video production and trace its strong economic purpose.
