Abstract

In this presentation we will summarize the available knowledge on environmental changes during the Bell Beaker period (ca. 2800-1400 cal BC) in NW Iberia. The main drivers of environmental change were climate changes and human transfomations, as welll as the couplings between them. It is quite signficant that the Bell Beaker occurred during the second half of the Neoglaciation, one of the coldest phases of the Holocene in NW Iberia. The interaction between the climatic deterioration and an increasing human pressure on forests lead to a reconfiguration of the vegetation cover, the elimination of the soil resources in some areas (due to enhanced soil erosion ) and its concentration in more localized, control-demanding sectors. At the same time, denudation of 15TH BELL BEAKER INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS "FROM ATLANTIC TO URAL" the landscape resulted in the exhumation of rock outcrops and a higher availability of rock surfaces for rock carving.
