Abstract

Dr. Thomas K. Fitzgerald, professor emeritus in the Department of Anthropology at UNCG, attended UNC-Chapel Hill for his undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees, as well as the Sorbonne in Paris and Stanford University. He came to UNCG to teach Anthropology in 1970 and taught for 30 years. In this interview, Dr. Fitzgerald and his partner, Bill Johnston, discuss his education, research interests, and a variety of LGBT issues including: teaching, curricula, self help groups, organizations, discrimination, being out and closeted, and campus culture. Dr. Fitzgerald also discusses his course on human sexuality, which was the first in the UNC system to teach openly about homosexuality.
