Abstract
- Korean verb/adjective endings are classified into two groups: pre-final endings and final endings. This paper examines the function of the retrospective suffix -deo, which is one of the prefinal endings. Previous studies have pointed out that the retrospective suffix -deo is a tense suffix and is used when the speaker recollects previous experiences. This paper insists that the suffix -deo has an evidential meaning, and that the use of the suffix -deo depends on the subject person and the type of verbs or adjectives. When the speaker’s information source is visual, the suffix -deo can be attached with a verb or a non-psychological adjective. In contrast, when the information source is non-visual, the suffix -deo can be used with a psychological adjective.
