Abstract

Professionalism, as a concept, has been the subject of major change over the millennia in general and the last century specifically. Assessing professionalism as an outcome measure of medical education mirrors the trend to measure outcomes of patient care as indicators of health care quality. Assessment motivates students to learn what is important and informs teachers whether programme expectations are clear and whether students have learned from these experiences.
