Lighter made from rifle shell with projectile.

Publication Year :
1942

Abstract

Lighter is made of a polished brass shell with attached projectile. It has been bisected so that the top half can be removed to reveal a flint wheel and wick, attached to a metal disc that has been soldered to the inside of the shell. On the outside of the shell around the top half is an engraved inscription in Hungarian, "EMLÉK", which roughly translates to "souvenir" in English. On the lower half is the inscription "A. DON PARTRÓL", which may be a name, next to an engraved image of the Hungarian coat of arms. This includes: a Holy Crown of Hungary crest above a shield with horizontal stripes on the left half and a Patriarchal cross on the right.

Notes :
Title by cataloger., Bottom of shell has the inscriptions "3" and "42", along with a star symbol. These inscriptions suggest but cannot confirm that this may be a Russian shell manufactured in 1942, and this is further supported by the note below., A handwritten note found on a piece of paper within the lighter reads, "Souvenir from the River Dawn - Russia". This may be referring to the Don River in Russia, the site of multiple World War II battles., The size of the shell cartridge is approximately 25x110 mm.
