Abstract

This photograph depicts a group of 21 men doing a calisthenics drill extending their arms on Pratt Field on the International YMCA College, now Springfield College, campus as part of May Day Festival of 1920. The men are in a line with their arms raised to their side. It almost looks like they are balancing on their left leg. The Festival included a gymnastics show of the skills of students from Springfield College. There can be seen a crowd on the background, some of the men are from the Springfield College gymnastics team. Notice the man sitting and playing a flute in the front of the picture. It is believed that the exercises might have been conducted with music on the background. The photograph is part of a collection of 9 photographs, all depicting the gymnastics show. The series of photographs are numbered and were taken by photographer John Barnum for a local newspaper, the Springfield Republican. Similar photographs can be found in: SC22691, SC22692, SC22693, SC22694, SC22695, SC22696, SC22698, SC22699.<br />Photographs are mounted on a cardboard matting.
