Abstract
- Unity and bipartisanship in Indiana faded and opposition to Lincoln, Morton, and the war became synonymous with treason. One of the demands of "The Degrading Compromise" was "Recognition of the enemy of the Independence of the Confederate States." The poster lists the "conditions for peace" said to be promoted by Copperhead politicians in Indiana. It states these were published in the Richmond Enquirer, referring to it as "the official organ of the rebel government." Citizens of Indiana are encouraged to repel the "Peace Organizations" and support the Union and their brave soldiers.<br />The illustration is by Thomas Nast and was published in Harper's Weekly. This item was part of the Indiana History Train 2006 exhibit: Faces of the Civil War. The broadside measures 16 1/2 x 23 7/8 in. This item is part of the Indiana and the Civil War Educator Curriculum Packet.
