Second and Alamitus".; The top of the page reads as follows: "Long Beach Home Telephone & Telegraph Co. Directory No. 1 October 24, 1903 1. A revised Directory will be issued in about ten days. New subscribers are being connected up daily. If you do not find the name of the person with whom you wish to talk in this Directory, call Chief Operator. 2. To call Exchange, take receiver from the hook. 3. When operator call for number, give the number of subscriber desired distinctly, repeating each figure of the number separately. 4. Face the instrument and talk in a moderate tone directly into transmitter. 5. When through talking return receiver to the hook promptly. The subscriber at the other end is waiting. 7. Important. Under no circumstances hang up receiver until through talking, as this will give a disconnecting signal at Central. 8. Kindly call up Telephone No. 99, and report all unsatisfactory service, and all line and instrument trouble to the Local Manage. 9. Operators are forbidden to visit over the lines. Their exclusive business is to answer calls. Please do not engage them in conversation. It impedes the service and may cause their dismissal. 10. The use of profane or obscene language over our lines is strictly forbidden. 11. Telephone rates will be given, and orders for telephones received at the Home Telephone Building, 231 East First St. Come and see us, or call up No. 99."
