Abstract
- The development of techniques and criteria permitting the release of a helicopter into known (i.e., forecast) icing situations is actively being investigated by both military and civilian agencies through ongoing test programs and study efforts. As part of this overall effort, helicopter icing characteristics, available ice protection technology, and test techniques are discussed in this technical treatment. Recommendations are provided in the areas of icing certification procedures and icing research. One of the key issues addressed in this report is the test environment, i.e., the use of inflight evaluation in natural icing only, or, the use of a simulated icing environment to supplement and/or expand the certification envelope. Involved in this issue is the shape (and extent) of the rotor ice (natural vs simulated) as it affects the aerodynamics and dynamics of the rotor system, together with the shedding characteristics as it affects the behavior and safety of the complete vehicle.
